Why Everybody Loves Dexter?

by Dexter Fan on September 19, 2008

At first the idea of “Dexter” a drama series about a serial killer is preposterous. However, that quickly changes after a few minutes through the first episode. The episode began with Dexter driving down the streets of Miami, telling himself that tonight “it” will happen again. He looks like a predator hunting his prey. It was an intense and memorable moment, but this was just one of the many throughout the series.

The premise of the audience rooting for the bad guy was not unique. However, it should have been hard to like the character Dexter Morgan. He is portrayed as an emotionless lab rat who works with the police by day, and a heartless monster that kills and dismembers his victims at night.

What makes Dexter unique is that he is a serial killer but while he may lack a conscience at times, he lives under a strong moral code. His code will not allow him to take an innocent life but allow him to kill people who deserve to die. So he only goes after bad people, criminals who have slipped through the justice system, due to loopholes in the law or were never apprehended.

Dexter is a vigilante of sorts, like Batman, but without the tights and his gadgets are all sharp knives and duct tape.  In my opinion audiences love stories about vigilantes who take the law into their own hands. If you still have doubts about the show, just watch the first few episodes. It’s a show to die for.
